Nonprofit Corporation papers establishing
the MMSF, Inc., were filed in May 2002, by a group of motorcyclists
concerned with helping families of local riders killed and/or injured in
accidents, and looking to promote motorcycle safety and awareness to
reduce those accidents.
"Nelson's Ride" began as a tribute to Nelson and to aid his children's
educational Fund, by Nelson's friends, families and others in August
2000, after his death in May of 2000.
The Event was "chartered" as an American Motorcyclists Association
(AMA) sanctioned Event, and has been each year. < br>
After the 3rd Annual Nelson's Ride in year 2002, his family thanked
organizers for their help with the kids scholarship Fund, asked us to
stop donating money to that Fund, but to keep "Nelson's Ride" going each
year and to help other local families of riders in similar need, and the
motorcycle community has been doing that since. "Nelson's Ride" was
rolled into the MMSF as its Essex County signature Event.
In March 2004, the MMSF received its IRS nonprofit status.
The MMSF is overseen by a Board of Directors, who all volunteer their
time and talents. Many area clubs, groups, organizations, businesses,
government agencies, and individuals donate their time and talent to
help may each MMSF Event successful and achieve its goals of helping
families of downed riders. Its truly a "Riders helping Riders"
organization.
