Release date:    August 6, 2005

(Lowell, MA)    A scholarship fund for the children of State Police Trooper Vincent Cila of Wakefield will be the benefactor of a fundraising night of games Tuesday, August 23 at the Brewery Exchange in Lowell, bringing together members of the law enforcement and motorcyclists communities.

Cila was killed while operating his state police issued motorcycle on July 22.  The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The Massachusetts Motorcyclists Survivor's Fund, Capone's Poker Tables of Andover, and the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association will co-host the event with the Brewery Exchange.

"One hundred percent of all proceeds raised August 23rd will be donated to a scholarship fund set up for Samantha and Nicole, that Cheryl will oversee" said Tony Capone, one of the state's leading organizers of Texas Hold 'Em Charity Tournaments and close friend of Cila.

Capone will be donating all the equipment needed to support the event and is rounding up volunteer dealers and staff from around the state to work the event to honor Trooper Cila and help the family.

"I'm proud the motorcycle community is rallying now to kick start this effort relieving some stress and uncertainty in Cheryl and the kids lives," said Capone.  "Riders always have big hearts, especially when a tragedy hits one of their own."

The night of Texas Hold 'Em, pool and dart tournaments will fill the Tuesday night, August 23 at the Brewery Exchange, 201 Cabot Street, Lowell, owed by Dave Elias of Lowell.  Elias is also a district manager of the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association and will be donating snacks and the costs of the pool tables.

"We've raised and donated over $100,000 for other charities so far this year with Tony's 'hold 'em tournaments," said Elias.  "When he told me Trooper Cila was one of his closest friends, and knowing he passed away in a motorcycle crash, . . . doing an event for Vinnie's kids was the natural thing to do."

Elias contacted the Essex County division of the Massachusetts Motorcyclists Survivor's Fund, seeking use of their non-profit status to host the August 23rd event.  Paul W. Cote of Amesbury, who serves as the MMSF President and is a co-MMA Board Member with Elias, brought the request before the MMSF Board who unanimously approved.  The MMA's Board also approved its support of the event.

"The State Police and its motorcycle unit help us throughout the season.  It is a terrible loss to the state, his family and the riding community.  This is what the MMSF is all about, 'riders helping riders' and their families immediately after an accident, in their most time of need," said Cote.

The MMSF, an outgrowth of Nelson's Ride, has donated over $50,000 to families of riders killed in accidents since 2000.

A permit for the event is being walked through the Lowell Police Department with the MMSF, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Ipswich, the lead event sponsor.

"Cheryl and the kids have told me they expect to be at the event to thank the organizers and see all their close friends," said Capone.

People wishing to attend the Tuesday night, August 23rd event, between 6 p.m. to midnight, may sign up at the Brewery or on-line for the Tournaments - at www.MassMSF.org, with the Texas Hold 'Em contest limited to 200 players at $100 entry fee; and the dart and pool contests at $10 per entry fee and limited to 100 players each.

Brackets for the pool and dart contests will be set up for friendly competition between law enforcement members and the bikers.

A 'second chance' Hold 'Em tournament that night will begin about 9:30.  People wishing to come and greet Cheryl and the family, can deliver checks payable to the MMSF, Inc.
